Unemployment can be overwhelming for anyone – it is a difficult process and can often be discouraging. Youth Job Connection is a new initiative that is designed to help young people between the ages of 15 and 29 living in Markham who face multiple barriers to employment. Barriers may include youth that are discriminated, LGBTTQ, Aboriginal, living with mental health or disabilities, or recent immigrants. In addition youth may be facing some combination of other challenging life circumstances, including living in poverty, poor or lack of labour market experience, in conflict with the law, or low levels of education and literacy. Participants who are between 15-18 years old must be legally excused from attending high school which means either the individual has graduated or they are participating in a supervised alternative learning program. This program provides access to employability and employment skills development, along with education/training and work experiences. The goal is to help youth achieve long-term employment, meaningful careers, and success in their future working lives.

Eligibility criteria:

  • 15 to 29 years old at the time of registration in the program
  • A resident of Markham, Ontario
  • Eligible to work in Canada
  • Unemployed
  • Not participating in a full-time training program

Youth Job Connection will consist of two components:

A year-round component, which will provide intensive employment supports for youth aged 15 to 29 who are not in employment, education or training and who experience multiple barriers to employment listed above.

A summer component (Youth Job Connection: Summer) which provides summer job opportunities and part-time job placements during the school year to help multi-barriered high school students, aged 15 to 18, make positive educational and career choices. The focus is on supporting young people facing challenging life circumstances and at risk of experiencing poor transitions between education and work.

  •  20 hours of pre-employment class training.
  • Part-time summer job placement with opportunity to work part-time in the fall on evenings and weekends.

  • 15-18 years of age
  • Must reside in Markham
  • Have a SIN card
  • Plan on returning to school in the Fall
