What is Queer Agenda?
The Queer Agenda is a weekly program by and for 2SLGBTQ+ communities, dedicated to creating a safer, more inclusive space for queer and gender-diverse youth in York Region. Through programming, education, and advocacy, we aim to combat homophobia, transphobia, and discrimination while empowering young people to live authentically and connect with community.
Whether through workshops, celebrations, or quiet spaces for reflection, Queer Agenda is driven by youth voices and exists to uplift, affirm, and celebrate 2SLGBTQ+ identities.
How Queer Agenda Supports Youth?
• Queer-led programming and community building
• Safer spaces for connection, conversation, and self-expression
• Creative activities such as art sessions and workshops
• Support that helps youth feel connected and valued
• Opportunities for youth leadership and voice

Why This Work Matters
- 2SLGBTQ+ youth make up 25–40% of the homeless youth population across Canada and are at increased risk of mental health issues, unemployment, and social isolation (Abramovich & Shelton, 2017; Gaetz et al., 2016).
- 2SLGBTQ+ youth are 120% more likely to experience homelessness compared to non-2SLGBTQ+ youth (Morton et al., 2018).
- The main pathway into homelessness among 2SLGBTQ+ youth is identity-based family violence and rejection following a young person coming out (Abramovich & Shelton, 2017).
- Transphobic and homophobic violence and discrimination persist in the emergency shelter system, leading many youth to seek alternative, often temporary and insecure, living arrangements (Abramovich, 2017).
- Youth in York Region report a lack of 2SLGBTQ+ specialized services, particularly outside Richmond Hill. Many are unable to access emergency shelters locally and must travel to other communities, highlighting the need for inclusive housing and support programs (Abramovich & Pang, 2020).
